Labuschagne Left Out from Australian One-Day International Team Versus Team India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw receiving a surprise selection.
Recent Form Result in Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the one-day international squad following managing only a single run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test recall ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes
There have been indications of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia seek a fix to their top-order woes.
Pace Returns and Injury Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he works to regain fitness from a spinal issue by the time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule
Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to secure a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
